Los Angeles

These are photos that I made in the spring of 2008 on a solo trip I took to Los Angeles to study Japanese textiles at the LA County Museum. These came from an afternoon spent exploring alone, taking a break from the library, seeing what was within a few blocks of my hotel room. In some ways, they are mistakes, partially through the nature of the toy plastic camera I used to shoot them, partially as a result of intention. My goal was not to take photos, but to research, and so they come from quite a different mindset than when I set out to make “serious art”. The Holga camera is a funny thing–plastic, fickle, and surprising–and yet, as it turns out, the perfect camera for an experiment in memory and perception, ideas that I am actually quite serious about.
